What is customs duty?
Customs duty is a state charge applied to goods imported (or in some cases exported) into the country. The duty is calculated as a percentage based on the customs value of the goods and varies by the type of goods. In Azerbaijan, import duty rates are most often 0%, 5%, 10% or 15%. The duty aims to protect domestic producers and generate budget revenue.
What is customs value?
Customs value is the base amount on which the duty is calculated. It usually includes the purchase price of the goods, as well as transport (shipping) and insurance costs (the CIF principle). Determining the correct customs value is important, because all subsequent payments — duty and VAT — are calculated based on this value.
What payments may arise on import?
In addition to customs duty, several payments may arise during import: Value Added Tax (VAT), excise (for certain goods), customs clearance fees, etc. VAT is usually calculated on the amount that results after the duty is added on top of the customs value. For this reason, all components must be taken into account when estimating the total import cost.
How to use the customs calculator?
Enter the customs value of the goods and select the applicable duty rate (for example 5%, 10% or 15%). The calculator instantly shows the customs duty payable. To calculate the total import cost (duty + VAT + additional payments) you can use the Import Cost Calculator.
